Papaya is a beautifully cleansing fruit that is one of the richest sources of antioxidants. It contains a complex variety of enzymes that help your body to break down and digest proteins, carbohydrates and fats. Therefore, it is wonderful for your digestion! It is also great for keeping blood sugar levels stable as it is a fruit that is low in sugar and high in fibre.
The benefits of papaya are not only internal, but also topical. The papain enzyme treats acne breakouts and breaks down dead skin cells to help your skin repair itself. Papaya is also rich in vitamin A, vitamin C and potassium which are fantastic for hydrating and healing the skin. So once you’ve finished scooping out the flesh to eat, you might like to rub the remainder of the flesh onto your face (holding onto the outer skin almost like a face washer). Let the papaya sit on your skin for 10-15 minutes before rinsing off to reap the benefits.
My favourite way to eat papaya is cut it in half, scoop out the seeds and turn it into papaya boats. These make the perfect base to add probiotic-rich coconut yoghurt, fresh berries and your favourite toppings (e.g. crunchy granola, nuts and seeds, cacao nibs, activated buckwheat or coconut flakes). But don’t throw away the seeds! They contain a powerhouse of nutrients and can be added to smoothies.
- 1 ripe papaya, halved
- 1 cup coconut yoghurt
- 1 cup fresh strawberries, sliced
- Granola/toppings of your choice – e.g. nuts, seeds, shredded coconut, activated buckwheat, cacao nibs)
- Slice the papaya in half and use a spoon to scoop out the seeds. Reserve the seeds to throw into your smoothies as they are super good for you!
- Spoon half a cup of coconut yoghurt into each papaya boat. Top with sliced strawberries and garnish with your choice of granola (or a mixture of nuts and seeds).
- Plate up and enjoy!
